Revision Rhinoplasty (Secondary Nose Surgery)

Revision rhinoplasty is a topic that many patients are curious about. Also known as secondary rhinoplasty or corrective nose surgery, this procedure is performed to correct aesthetic or functional problems that may occur after a previous rhinoplasty operation.

In this article, I would like to explain revision rhinoplasty in detail and provide helpful information for patients who are considering revision rhinoplasty in Istanbul.

What Is Revision Rhinoplasty?

resulting from a previous nose surgery.

When you look around, you will see many people who are happy with their rhinoplasty results. However, there are also patients who feel disappointed or regret their previous nose surgery. In such cases, revision rhinoplasty can help correct the problems and improve both the appearance and function of the nose.

The most common reasons for revision rhinoplasty include:

  • Aesthetic expectations not fully met after the first surgery

  • Functional problems such as nasal obstruction or breathing difficulties

  • A combination of both aesthetic and functional concerns

In primary rhinoplasty procedures, revision surgery may become necessary mainly for two reasons: either the nasal structure has been overly altered, or it has not been sufficiently corrected. Another common issue is nasal asymmetry. In some cases, visible scarring may also occur.

What Can Be Achieved with Revision Rhinoplasty?

Similar to primary rhinoplasty, the main goal of revision rhinoplasty is to improve both the appearance and functionality of the nose.

Sometimes the results of the first surgery may not meet the expectations of the patient or the surgeon. In such situations, revision rhinoplasty can correct the issues from the previous operation.

These corrections may range from minor procedures performed under local anesthesia in 15–20 minutes to more complex surgeries requiring longer operative time.

In some cases, even if there were no breathing problems before the initial surgery, functional issues such as nasal obstruction may develop afterward. Revision rhinoplasty can also address these problems and restore proper nasal breathing.

Problems That Can Be Corrected with Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty can address many aesthetic and functional issues, including:

  • Crooked nose

  • Nasal tip asymmetry

  • Overly sharp or asymmetrical nasal tip

  • Cartilage irregularities

  • Dorsal hump (hump nose)

  • Over-rotated or overly upturned nose

  • Saddle nose deformity

  • Asymmetrical nostrils

  • Polly beak deformity (cartilage or soft tissue related)

  • Breathing difficulties and nasal obstruction

In revision rhinoplasty, my goal is always to correct both aesthetic and functional problems simultaneously.

One of the most common functional problems encountered during revision surgery is nasal obstruction. Conditions such as septal deviation or nasal wall collapse may contribute to breathing difficulties. Many people have a deviated septum without being aware of it, meaning that the cartilage and bone inside the nose are curved.

In severe cases of nasal obstruction, rhinoplasty becomes necessary not only for aesthetic reasons but also to improve breathing function.
